The S6 MaxV is the most recent creation in the Roborock series of robot vacuum cleaners, and it is their top-of-the-line model. This unit features double suction power, which means that it can vacuum efficiently even on highly-padded carpets. In addition, it has a new 2-stage cleaning system. In the first stage, the brush on the bottom of the unit cleans the ground, while the wall-cleaning brush lifts dirt from the walls. In the second stage, the main brush vacuums up the debris from the first stage.
It’s hard to believe, but it’s been almost 1 year since this review was originally published. Since then, I’ve used our amazing Roborock S6 MaxV robot vacuum for over 50 hours, and I’ve become fond of it. This robot vacuum is a great choice for anyone looking for a decent robot vacuum, at an affordable price.
We’ve all heard the right-on clichés about how we should do things better, and we should end things we don’t like with a bit of dignity. That’s great if you’re a celebrity or a politician, but what about the rest of us? Whether it’s a relationship, a job, a hobby, or a TV show, it’s hard to walk away from something we’ve fallen in love with.
Roborock Malaysia was kind enough to give us the Roborock S6 MaxV so that we could evaluate it and put it to the test. But then it dawned to me that although a short-term evaluation is fine, a long-term review provides a better picture of what’s going on below the hood. So, we’ve been using this robot vacuum pretty extensively from December to September (as of the date this review is being published), and in this Roborock S6 MaxV Review, we’ll share our experience, what to expect, and how it held up over the course of 7-8 months – trust us, it did an amazing job in more ways than one.
Build and construct
Robotic vacuums seem to be straightforward and, in an unattractive word, generic. However, appearances are less important since, at the end of the day, functionality and what’s actually beneath that equipment, as well as how it performs its purpose, are the most important factors. That said, the Roborock S6 MaxV we got has a shiny, shimmering polycarbonate body that, to be honest, looks quite attractive. Consider it a robotic pet with two front-facing eyes that roams about sucking up all the dust and other debris from the ground.
However, you can see that it has certain structural benefits, such as a bumper on the front that activates as soon as it collides with an object, preventing it from moving forward. The wheels and a spinning brush on one side of the S6 MaxV enable it to push particles into corners or places where it can’t fully reach into the suction area, allowing it to clean as efficiently as possible.
It does feature a little hockey-puck-like device on top that is really a useful component of its cleaning, which we shall discuss later. But, if you’re asking about clearance, the vacuum could only go where it could fit in, thus in my room, where there was clearance on the ground, such as my shelf and cabinet, it was able to go beneath and get the job done. Given that it’s constructed like a tank and nicely put together, the Roborock S6 MaxV can put up a good show and stand up well in most situations. If you want your robot vacuum to be as minimalist as possible, the Roborock S6 MaxV is the way to go.
The Water Tank and the location where you’d connect the mop pad to clean the floor are located on the rear, followed by the speaker on one end and the air vent on the other to prevent particles from entering the environment again. The Cover Grip’s Dustbin is just a container with a filter – all you have to do is take it out and throw it away in your bin. It’s also machine washable!
Smart Features, Integration, and Connectivity
The Roborock S6 MaxV doesn’t skimp on any of those features, as it comes decked out in every way possible. Flagship-grade vacuums tend to have features where you can connect it to Wi-Fi to control it wherever and however you want, and the Roborock S6 MaxV doesn’t skimp on any of those features, as it comes decked out in every way possible. Starting with the physical controls since it’s something I’d want to have on a robot vacuum if the cleaning procedure can’t be started from your phone due to internet connection problems (Especially if you are on Unifi, true story.). The indicator beneath the Cover Grip may even inform you how the connection situation is. On the other hand, there are three buttons on the top:
- When you push and hold the power button in the center, you may not only turn on and off, but also start cleaning (as the mapped layout of the home is registered within the system itself).
- It’s Spot Clean to start Spot Cleaning on the left.
- On the right, choose Home to return the vacuum to the dock.
If you wish to reconnect to the Wi-Fi, press and hold the Spot Clean and Dock button for three seconds. This level of control over the vacuum itself is reassuring to me because when my mother wants to start cleaning – and let’s face it, putting ourselves in our parents’ position may be exhausting – having the button control to start cleaning is a nice first step. Another item to keep in mind is the charging connection, which is the silver contact point on the bottom of the vacuum – so keep the area where you’ll be placing the dock and the anti-slip mat clear.
Finally, for those IoT enthusiasts out there, the Roborock S6 MaxV may be added to your Google Home and become a part of your home environment, with commands triggering the vacuum to do its job enabled.
The App Experience is Fantastic
A fantastic software, hardware apart, makes up for the rest of the experience, and Roborock nailed it. You’d be amazed at how attentive the whole layout is and how welcoming it is to users without being overpowering. When you first open the app, you’ll notice whether your vacuum is online, and on the top right, you’ll see all of your devices, or if you only have one, it’ll be highlighted, and at the bottom, you’ll find two additional buttons: Vacuum Notifications and Profile.
When you first turn on the Roborock S6 MaxV, you’ll see the important information on the top: cleaning area, battery level, and cleaning duration, followed by a map of your house, and finally a few buttons at the bottom: Option to clean the whole house, a specific room or zone, map management, and a cleaning option that includes vacuum power, water level, and even intensity customizing depending on room. Finally, there’s the Clean button.
If you go into the settings, you may modify the robot’s settings, camera functions, the robot’s voice, Schedules, Pin n Go, Remote Control, Cleaning history, and – most importantly – Device Sharing and Firmware Updates.
The best part about the app is that you can control the vacuum from anywhere. The reason I emphasize Firmware Updates is that they help you optimize, improve, and handle tasks better over time. Device Sharing, on the other hand, is brilliant – all you have to do is enter your family member’s email or phone number, and you can share the vacuum with them. So, when you’re not around, they may do anything they want with it.
The Roborock S6 MaxV’s app experience alone is more than enough for me to give it a complete 5 out of 5 for how effectively it handles everything inside the app. Now, you may have noted that we mentioned camera before – that is the ReactAI, which is the true star of the show.
The Real Stars: ReactAI and PreciSense LiDAR
This is the technological feature that distinguishes the Roborock S6 MaxV from its rivals. Let me go through each one one by one, beginning with ReactAI.
Short for ReactiveAI, there are two cameras on the front that operate in the same way as human eyes do: the dual camera looks at things, determines how far away they are, and then uses AI to respond on how to avoid the obstacle. The Infrared sensor is placed in a tiny black bar at the bottom, allowing it to see what is going on at night. This, coupled with the PreciSense LiDAR (the hockey-puck-like device on top), enables you to map a room much more effectively than a camera. You get the best of both worlds, where they compensate for each other’s flaws. The two features are powered by a Qualcomm APQ8053 CPU, and the AI is TensorFlow, the open-source machine learning and AI software that we’re all acquainted with.
Now, any user’s privacy is unquestionably a top priority, particularly in light of recent studies showing how hackers may tap into a vacuum to snoop on people. Roborock considered this and came up with the following response: “Nothing is stored, transmitted to the cloud, or copied.” The pictures recorded are instantly erased, and it is TUVRheinland certified as a secure smart home device.
Effectiveness of Cleaning
Aside from the aforementioned characteristics, we’re looking at cleaning efficiency at the conclusion of the day. Now, full disclosure: it took us this long to have a decent sense of the efficiency of the Roborock S6 MaxV since this is the second Robot Vacuum we’ve worked with, and it’s a bit difficult to judge how well it compares to its predecessor but to accept the “on-paper” promises on their own. So, with that out of the way, here’s my long-term cleaning experience.
For the most part, my usage of the Roborock S6 MaxV is quite straightforward: I clean my room once a week and clean the whole house once a day. The vacuum head is now placed at the bottom with a revolving brush that sweeps into the container, and it has an omni-directional wheel on the front and a primary wheel apart from the brushes to move around. The side brush and main brush turn on and begin cleaning as soon as it begins.
Throughout the Cleaning Procedure
Because it’s a robot vacuum, you must relocate any items that might create a disturbance in the cleaning process, which could be as simple as a “wire” laying on the ground – which made us understand that it does lose out on detecting objects that aren’t large enough to be considered an object. When it leaves the dock, however, it maps the room it is in and begins the cleaning process. The vacuum isn’t silent, but it’s not as noisy as you would expect – which is ideal for families with newborns who don’t want the vacuum to wake them up. This is just the vacuum portion of the process. When it comes to mopping, after you’ve filled the water tank, it will rub the plate down, release the water, and clean the floor.
Because it’s a circular vacuum with a very large body that moves around, it cleans in its own pattern, and you may notice that in places where it’s difficult to reach, the one side brush tries all it can to push it to the main brush. This is when I wished the vacuum had two brushes so that it could push more dust on both sides of the room to clear the corners. When it senses a barrier, it will instantly avoid the area and go on to other areas, such as the chair in my room, where it will clean around it rather than attempting to get under the wheelbase.
The Roborock S6 MaxV handles the majority of the readily accessible surface surfaces admirably, cleaning and mopping them simultaneously. On tiled surfaces, my primary worry was whether it could move correctly, and it did so admirably, thanks to the rubberized main wheel, which grips the ground effectively and does not impede movement even while cleaning. The cliff sensor aids in the detection of bumps and cliffs so that it can stay as safe as possible.
Once the cleaning procedure is complete, it will return to the dock to charge and provide you with information on how much it cleaned and which areas it covered. Unless it becomes stuck, in which case you’ll hear it remark, “The vacuum is stuck,” and get a notice on your phone, the 5200mAh battery is more than enough to clean my whole house and not once has it returned to the dock unfinished. When you respond to it, the vacuum recalibrates its position to determine precisely where it is and resumes where it left off.
Maintenance
This is essential since the Roborock S6 MaxV needs some upkeep – it’s not as simple as letting it wander, cleaning it, and calling it a day. When the vacuum meets hair that is longer than normal, it tends to tangle and wrap around the brush, causing issues when the vacuum tries to clean again, and you will lose efficiency. That said, you’ll see at the bottom that the main brush is kept in place by a cover latch, and the Side Brush is attached with a screw, so get your screwdriver.
When you open it up, the brush simply comes off, there are tiny locks to remove the bearing, and then you can slide the looped hair – we ended up cutting the hair with a blade that is really placed in the vacuum itself. After unscrewing the side brush, it comes out quite easy.
Both the water and dust containers, as well as the filter, are washable, and it is advised to maintain excellent hygiene. The vacuum will remind you to dispose of any extra water to prevent fungal growth over time. The mat is simpler to remove and clean by just throwing it in the washing machine. That’s all there is to it.
Something to Keep in Mind
For the most part, there aren’t many flaws with the Roborock S6 MaxV since it accomplishes all it should, but there is one:
- Because it’s a robot vacuum, it has the same cleaning efficiency problems as every other robot vacuum cleaner. The day when we can rely entirely on robot vacuums is still a long way off. To clean places that the S6 MaxV couldn’t reach, a cordless vacuum like the Roborock H7 is an excellent option.
This is a common problem with vacuums of this grade, and customers who purchase one would be aware of it. But this is the sort of help you need if you have a hectic schedule and want to keep housework to a minimum for yourself, your spouse, or family members. So, before you start cleaning, make sure your room and house are clean.
Conclusion
After almost a year of use, the Roborock S6 MaxV has impressed us in more ways than one: by providing quality updates that fix bugs and issues, by providing amazing app support, by providing a great cleaning experience, and, not to mention, thoughtful features that fit into our daily lives but don’t overwhelm anyone. The Roborock S7 is already out and about in many homes by the time you read this, but if you don’t have the money for the S7 and want something similar, the Roborock S6 MaxV checks off every box on your list.
