The AP Top 25 college football poll is out, and there’s some movement in the standings following a crazy weekend of games. What’s next for each rated team is as follows:
1st place previously
Week 10’s outcome was a 43-6 victory against Missouri.
What’s next: it’ll be a trip to Tennessee (Saturday, 3:30 p.m. ET)
Jermaine Burton’s progress has been limited by injuries this season, as it has been for many of Georgia’s receivers. He made his comeback from a groin injury against Missouri, catching three passes for 76 yards and a score. Arian Smith returned after missing the UAB game on Sept. 11 and grabbed a 35-yard touchdown pass. “Arian could be the quickest football player in the nation,” quarterback Stetson Bennett said. “All I did was trust him to go to a location, and he got there and completed the play.” Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint (ankle) hauled in two 18-yard receptions.
What you should know: Georgia’s defense, which leads the FBS in scoring defense while allowing just 6.6 points per game, might face one of its toughest tests against Tennessee’s high-flying attack. The Volunteers are third in scoring (38.2 points) and fourth in overall offense under first-year coach Josh Heupel (457.7 yards). In a 45-42 upset of No. 18 Kentucky on the road on Saturday, quarterback Hendon Hooker completed 15 of 20 throws for 316 yards and four touchdowns. Georgia has won four consecutive games in the series, all by at least 23 points, and nine of the last eleven overall. Schlabach, Mark
Previous position: 2
Week 10 result: Tulsa wins 28-20.
What’s next: at the University of South Florida (Friday, 6 p.m. ET)
RB is the X-factor. Ford, Jerome. The Bearcats’ best rusher departed the game in the second quarter with what seemed to be a lower left leg injury and did not return in the 28-20 victory against Tulsa. Coach Luke Fickell is optimistic that Ford will return soon, since the Bearcats rely on him in the running game.
What you should know: The Bearcats aren’t playing their best football right now, despite their undefeated record. Perhaps the pressure of having to win big is beginning to get to them, but if they want to keep their perfect record, they’ll have to play better down the stretch. The regular season concludes with a road game against South Florida on Friday, a home game against SMU, and a trip to East Carolina. Chris Low (c)
3rd place before.
Week 10’s outcome was a 20-14 victory against LSU.
What’s next: a matchup with New Mexico State (Saturday, noon ET)
X factor: After allowing four sacks against LSU, the offensive line continues to be a huge issue. The same problems that have plagued the team all season — too many penalties, too many bad plays, too much pressure on the quarterback — resurfaced against the Tigers and need to be addressed immediately.
What you need to know: As if things couldn’t get much worse up front, starting center Darrian Dalcourt went down with an injury against LSU and didn’t return, forcing Chris Owens to go from tackle to center and upsetting the group’s chemistry. Alex Scarborough’s remark
Previous position: 4
Week ten’s outcome: no game
What’s next: Baylor University (Saturday, noon ET)
LB is the X-factor. Bonitto, Nik. Abram Smith of Baylor, who rushed for 125 yards against TCU, has already surpassed 1,000 yards on the ground this season, and the Bears have had seven different players score running touchdowns. Last week, Bonitto said that the Sooners’ defensive performance this season has humiliated him, and pledged to help the younger players to change that.
What you should know: Lincoln Riley is undefeated versus Baylor, and the College Football Playoff standings might stoke the Sooners’ fire. Caleb Williams completed 23 of 30 throws against Texas Tech and ended with a 255.2 passing efficiency rating, the highest in the nation among quarterbacks who attempted at least 30 attempts this season. Dave Wilson is an author.
Previous position: 7
Week 10’s outcome was a 26-16 victory against Washington.
Next up: against. Washington State (Saturday, 10:30 p.m. ET)
RB is the X-factor. Travis Dye is a musician. Give the ball to Dye if you’re unsure. After starter CJ Verdell went down with an injury, it’s become Oregon’s unspoken slogan this season. To fill the hole, Dye has gone above and beyond. On Saturday, he rushed for 211 yards and a score while Oregon only managed 98 yards via the air. It would be an understatement to suggest Dye carried the Ducks.
What you need to know: The Ducks will play a Washington State squad that has showed a lot of fight after losing half of their coaching staff due to a vaccination requirement next weekend. No game will be easy at this time in the season for a club dealing with so much pressure as Oregon. Paolo Uggetti (Paolo Uggetti)
Previous position: 6
Week 10’s outcome was a 26-17 victory against Nebraska.
What’s next: a matchup with Purdue (Saturday, 3:30 p.m. ET)
QB is the X factor. Stroud, C.J. It’s difficult to criticize a quarterback who passes for 400 yards. But with two vital interceptions, a strip-sack fumble that the Buckeyes were able to recover, and other wasted chances to record an even greater victory over Nebraska, that is likely to happen for Ohio State’s quarterback. After the game, coach Ryan Day remarked, “There will be a lot of learning lessons along the road, but he also did some fantastic things, threw some fantastic footballs, and made some excellent selections. It’s all a part of the procedure.”
What you should know: The Buckeyes’ last stretch of the season won’t be any easier, as they’ll continue to face concerns about their uneven performances against strong teams as they try to secure a playoff berth. Purdue is up next, and Ohio State won’t need any reminders of the Boilermakers’ penchant for sabotaging seasons. Andrea Adelson’s remark
Previous position: 8
The outcome of Week 10 was a 34-6 victory against Navy.
What’s next: we’ll be in Virginia (Saturday, 7:30 p.m. ET)
X factor: Notre Dame quarterback Jack Coan has had an up-and-down season. He’s battled injuries and uneven play, but he was able to put together a strong performance versus Navy. Coan’s ability to get into a rhythm and play consistently would be a huge asset down the stretch.
What you should know: Notre Dame has just one defeat, which came against a ranked Cincinnati club. The Irish still have Virginia, Georgia Tech, and Stanford on their schedule, so there won’t be any big matchups to attempt to impress the College Football Playoff selection committee, but one defeat may be enough depending on how the rest of the season goes. With the way Notre Dame is playing right now, it seems reasonable to expect the squad to complete the season with an 11-1 record. Tom VanHaaren (Tom VanHaaren)
Previous position: 5
Week 10 ended with a 40-29 defeat against Purdue.
What’s next: a matchup with Maryland (Saturday, 4 p.m. ET)
X factor: Heisman hopeful Kenneth Walker III rushed for 146 yards and a score against Purdue, but he was stifled for the most part. If the Spartans are going to have a chance to end the season with just one defeat, he’ll have to be at his best.
What you should know: The defeat to Purdue hurts Michigan State’s playoff hopes, but the Spartans still have a chance to win the Big Ten, and who knows what happens after that. In the last three games, the Spartans will face Maryland, Ohio State, and Penn State. It won’t be an easy road, but considering Michigan State’s current form, the Spartans have a chance. When Michigan State takes on the Buckeyes, the secondary will be a concern. C.J. Stroud of Ohio State is averaging over 324 yards per game, while Michigan State recently allowed Purdue quarterback Aiden O’Connell to throw for 536 yards. Tom VanHaaren (Tom VanHaaren)
Previous position: 9
Week 10 result: victory against Indiana by a score of 29-7.
What’s next: Penn State is on the horizon (Saturday, noon ET)
QB Cade McNamara is the X factor. If Michigan is going to overcome Penn State and Ohio State, it will need to rely on its passing game to get the ball moving. The offense has focused on the run game, but McNamara used the pass to keep Michigan in the game against Michigan State. McNamara was recovering from an injury he received against Michigan State in the Indiana game, according to Jim Harbaugh. To complete the season, Michigan needs McNamara to be totally healthy.
What you should know: Michigan has one defeat on the season, but two of its next three games are against Penn State and Ohio State. Outside of the record, wins in those two games would go a long way for the Michigan program. Harbaugh has yet to defeat Ohio State, and he has already been chastised for losing to Michigan State for the second year in a row. Wins would also demonstrate that Michigan is on the right track and making progress. But that’s a large assignment, and although it’s not impossible, finishing the season with just one defeat will be difficult for Michigan. Tom VanHaaren (Tom VanHaaren)
Week before last: 11
Week 10 result: victory against West Virginia by a score of 24-3.
What’s next: TCU vs. vs. vs. vs. vs. v (Saturday, 8 p.m. ET)
X factor: The Cowboys’ complete pass rush is a force to be reckoned with, and defensive end Brock Martin led the charge on Saturday. In just 32 pass attempts, the Pokes sacked West Virginia quarterbacks eight times and cruised to a 24-3 victory on the road.
What you should know: OSU is in complete control of the Big 12 championship chase. With a 5-1 conference record, the Cowboys are alone in second place, and they’ll be favored in their next two games before a Nov. 27 showdown with Oklahoma. Bill Connelly’s quote
Week before last: 13
The outcome of Week 10 was a 20-3 victory against Auburn.
What’s next: a semester at Ole Miss (Saturday, 7 p.m. ET)
X factor: A&M’s secondary has been outstanding in 2021, holding Auburn quarterback Bo Nix to only 20-for-41 passing for 153 yards and an interception in a 20-3 victory on Saturday, and nickelback Antonio Johnson may be the team’s top tackler and cover player.
What you need to know: The Aggies are still alive in both the SEC West and the CFP contests, despite the fact that they’ll need a lot of assistance in both. They’re currently 4-2 in SEC play and 7-2 overall. If they win out, and Alabama loses, they might sneak into the top four with a game versus Georgia in the SEC championship. Bill Connelly’s quote
15th place before.
Week 10 result: victory against Liberty by a score of 27-14.
What’s next: a matchup with Texas A&M. (Saturday, 7 p.m. ET)
QB is the X factor. Matt Corral has been limping for a long now, yet he keeps on producing. His 20-for-27 throwing for 324 yards led to a 27-14 victory against Liberty that was closer than the spread predicted.
What you should know: Since Hugh Freeze coached the Rebels to a 10-3 season in 2015, they hadn’t won more than six games in a season. They won their eighth game of 2021 against Freeze’s Flames on Saturday. It’s not out of the question to reach double digits. Bill Connelly’s quote
Week before last: 10
58-55 defeat to North Carolina in Week 10
What’s next: vs. North Carolina State (Saturday, 7:30 p.m. ET)
Sam Hartman has been a key part of Wake Forest’s success this season, and the game against North Carolina demonstrated how much the team relies on him in crucial moments. Hartman threw for 398 yards and five touchdowns while also rushing for 78 yards and two scores.
What you need to know: Wake Forest’s chances of entering the College Football Playoff have dwindled as a result of the defeat. That doesn’t mean the club doesn’t still have a lot to play for, as Clemson, NC State, and Boston College remain on the schedule. The Demon Deacons have a chance to win the conference, and with the amount of instability this season, who knows? A one-loss ACC champion could have a chance in the end. Tom VanHaaren (Tom VanHaaren)
Previous position: 17
59-14 victory against Idaho State in Week 10
What’s next: Georgia Southern University (Nov. 20, 4 p.m. ET)
WR Puka Nacua is the X-factor. For the fourth time this season, the sophomore wideout surpassed 100 receiving yards in a game on Saturday. Although he has just two touchdowns this season, he is averaging almost 20 yards per reception.
What you should know: BYU will have a week off before finishing the season with the Clay Helton two-step. In two weeks, the Cougars will play Georgia Southern (who just hired Helton as head coach) before completing the season against Helton’s previous club, USC. Paolo Uggetti (Paolo Uggetti)
Week before last: 16
UTEP was defeated 44-23 in Week 10 of the season.
What’s next: a matchup with Southern Miss. (Saturday, 3:30 p.m. ET)
RB is the X-factor. McCormick is sincere. Despite the fact that McCormick was named All-America last year and was a semifinalist for the Doak Walker Award, there is still a feeling that the public hasn’t fully appreciated his talent. He’s an NFL prospect that college fans should keep an eye on before the junior’s time at UTSA expires.
What you should know: The Roadrunners are off to a remarkable 9-0 start that the College Football Playoff selection committee should not overlook. This club is a top-25 contender and one of just four undefeated teams in college football. After a relatively easy game against Southern Miss this week, a crucial matchup versus UAB is scheduled for Nov. 20. It will most likely determine who wins the Conference USA West. Kyle Bonagura (Kyle Bonagura)
Week before last: 12
The outcome of Week 10 was a 20-3 defeat against Texas A&M.
What’s next: a matchup with Mississippi State (Saturday, noon ET)
Bo Nix is the X-factor in Auburn’s success. Nix was excellent in victories over Arkansas and Ole Miss, but he struggled immensely in a humiliating 20-3 defeat at Texas A&M on Saturday (20-for-41, two turnovers).
What you should know: In the SEC West, there is no rest for the weary. The Tigers must quickly forget behind a painful setback and prepare for Mike Leach’s challenging and distinctive Mississippi State Bulldogs, who were rated 17th in last week’s postseason standings before losing to Arkansas. Bill Connelly’s quote
Week before last: 20
South Florida was defeated 54-42 in Week 10 of the season.
What’s next: we’ll be at Temple (Saturday, noon ET)
QB Clayton Tune is the X-factor. Tune has thrown 12 touchdowns and 0 interceptions in his last four games. He’s completing 70% of his passes this season, which is a 10% improvement over previous year.
What you should know: If Houston beats Temple on Saturday, it would be the first time since 2015 that the Cougars will play in the AAC title game. Houston has a 92.7 percent probability of winning according to ESPN’s FPI. Dave Wilson is an author.
Week before last: 14
Week 10 outcome vs. TCU: 30-28 defeat
What’s next: Oklahoma versus (Saturday, noon ET)
QB Gerry Bohanon is the X factor. The junior quarterback had a great start to the season, throwing no interceptions in his first 152 pass attempts, but has since thrown five in his past 78 attempts. If the Bears get into a shootout with Oklahoma on Saturday, they can’t afford to make such errors.
What you should know: After TCU’s Chandler Morris racked up 531 total yards against the Bears, they may have a sudden crisis of confidence on defense. Baylor, which came into the game allowing just 209 passing yards per game, will need to get things figured up quickly with Caleb Williams in town. Dave Wilson is an author.
Previous position: 19
Week 10’s outcome was a 17-12 victory against Northwestern.
What’s next: Minnesota versus (Saturday, 3:30 p.m. ET)
RB is the X-factor. Tyler Goodson hadn’t rushed for more than 100 yards since Iowa defeated Kent State in mid-September, but he rushed for 141 yards and a score against Northwestern on Saturday. This season, Goodson has 961 total yards of offense.
What you should know: Following a 23-20 victory over Penn State, Iowa went on a two-game losing streak, being outscored 51-14 by Purdue and Wisconsin. Next week, the Hawkeyes host Minnesota in a vital home game. Matt Eisenberg’s quote
Unranked the week before
Week 10 score: 52-3 victory against Rutgers
Next up: versus. Northwestern (Saturday, noon ET)
After a shaky start to the season, Braelon Allen’s emergence as running back has given consistency and productivity for Wisconsin’s attack. On just 15 attempts, the freshman rushed for 129 yards and a score, his fifth straight 100-yard running effort. Allen’s job will become even more important if Chez Mellusi (leg) is out for an extended amount of time.
What you need to know: Wisconsin has turned around its season and is confident heading into the final run. The Badgers return home for the next two weeks to play struggling Northwestern and Nebraska clubs before traveling to Minnesota for a game that might determine the Big Ten West Division. The last six meetings between Wisconsin and Northwestern have ended in a tie. Adam Rittenberg’s remark
Unranked the week before
Week 10 result: victory against Florida State by a score of 28-14.
What’s next: Wake Forest University (Saturday, 7:30 p.m. ET)
Devin Leary, the X factor. Because the ACC’s quarterback performance has been so outstanding this season, Leary’s leadership of the Wolfpack has gone unnoticed on a national level. Following an injury that cut short his promising 2020 season, Leary has proved why he is such a difference-maker, completing 66 percent of his throws for 2,161 yards, 21 touchdowns, and just two interceptions.
What you need to know: NC State takes on Wake Forest in Winston-Salem on Saturday, and the Atlantic Division might be determined. With a 5-0 record, the Demon Deacons lead the division, while NC State is 4-1. Wake Forest has won three of the last four matchups, including a thrilling 45-42 victory a year ago. Andrea Adelson’s remark
Previous position: 21
Week 10’s outcome was a 28-8 victory against Georgia Southern.
What’s next: a matchup with Georgia State (Saturday, 2 p.m. ET)
RB Shermari Jones is the X-factor. Jones was even more vital than usual versus Georgia Southern without quarterback Grayson McCall and running back Reese White. His 96 yards on 20 carries fell just short of his fourth 100-yard running game of the season, but it was a major lift in a crucial victory.
What you should know: The Chanticleers will hope to run the table with Georgia State, Texas State, and South Alabama still on the schedule, but a 7-1 Sun Belt record may not be enough to win the East. South Alabama, Troy, and Georgia Southern would all have to lose for Appalachian State to advance. Kyle Bonagura (Kyle Bonagura)
22nd in the previous ranking
Week 10’s outcome was a 31-14 victory against Maryland.
What’s next: Michigan against (Saturday, noon ET)
X factor: Jahan Dotson continues to prove why he’s one of the best wide receivers in the Big Ten, catching 11 passes for 242 yards and three scores against Maryland. In his previous two games, Dotson has 22 catches for 369 yards. In an offense that constantly fails to run the ball, he remains quarterback Sean Clifford’s primary target.
What you should know: For the remainder of the season, Penn State will play spoiler, starting this week when Michigan visits Beaver Stadium. The Nittany Lions have won three of the last four meetings with the Wolverines, including three in a row. Penn State has some apparent weaknesses, particularly in the run game and offensive line, but it also has some obvious assets, such as Clifford and a fantastic red zone defense. The Lions have a chance to finish 9-3 if they win out. Adam Rittenberg’s remark
Week before last: 24
Week 10’s outcome was a 21-17 victory against Georgia State.
What’s next: a visit to Troy (Saturday, 3:30 p.m. ET)
X factor: With Chris Smith ineffective against Georgia State, Montrell Johnson scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns to help Louisiana comeback for the victory. In three of his last four games, Johnson has rushed for more than 90 yards.
What you should know: Next week, Levi Lewis and the Ragin’ Cajuns will play a Troy squad that has won three of their last four games. After that, they’ll play Liberty, who will have an additional week to prepare. Matt Eisenberg’s quote
Unranked the week before
The outcome of Week 10 was a 54-29 victory against Duke.
What’s next: a matchup with North Carolina (Thursday, 7:30 p.m. ET)
X factor: While Kenny Pickett is clearly Pitt’s motor, wide receiver Jordan Addison continues to shine. Addison led the Panthers with seven catches for 171 yards and a score, his second game in a row with over 140 receiving yards and his sixth 100-yard game of the season. This season, the sophomore has the most touchdown catches by a Pitt player since Larry Fitzgerald had 22 in 2003. In addition, he scored on a short running touchdown.
What you should know: Pitt begins its most crucial stretch of the season against North Carolina on Thursday night at home. In 2019, the Panthers snapped a six-game losing run versus UNC. Following North Carolina, Pitt will visit Virginia in a game that will most likely determine the ACC Coastal Division champion. Adam Rittenberg’s remark
Kentucky (18), SMU (23), and Fresno State have all dropped out (25)
