Former Denver Broncos WR Demaryius Thomas, 33, was found dead in his home by the police. The cause of death is still unknown.
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Demaryius Thomas, a former Denver Broncos wide receiver whose calm manner belied a burning drive to reach “everyday excellence,” has died at the age of 33, according to authorities.
Thomas was discovered dead at his home in Roswell, Georgia, authorities reported Thursday night. According to preliminary findings, Thomas’ death may have been caused by a medical condition, according to authorities.
The family thinks Thomas died as a result of a seizure, according to LaTonya Bonseigneur, a first cousin who grew up with him and considered them siblings.
“We suspect he had a seizure while bathing,” Bonseigneur said early Friday. “He had been suffering from seizures for over a year.” “We don’t know when he died. We just chatted with him the day before yesterday.”
On Thursday night, former teammates speculated that Thomas had been suffering seizures in recent months.
Early Friday, the Broncos issued a statement lamenting the death of “an amazing player and a wonderful person.”
The Broncos declared, “We are crushed and totally grieved by the untimely, terrible loss of Demaryius Thomas.” “Our whole company, including his colleagues and coaches, as well as our fans, adored D.T. We were looking forward to commemorating Demaryius as one of the best players in team history for years to come after he just retired as a Bronco.”
“Demaryius’ humility, warmth, friendliness, and contagious grin will always be remembered by those who knew and loved him,” the Broncos said.
We are utterly sad and horrified.

Thomas, who would have been 34 on Christmas, announced his retirement from the NFL in June with a brief video including his trademark grin and a peace sign.
“Demaryius Thomas is my name. I ultimately made the choice to retire…. I’m going to retire as a Denver Bronco “he said “I’m finished, and I did well.”
Peyton Manning, who played with Thomas for four seasons and is a Hall of Fame quarterback, also issued a statement early Friday.
Manning remarked, “DT was a greater guy than he was a player, and he was a Hall of Fame player.” “That demonstrates how terrific a guy he was. He cared for my children as if they were his own. Every teammate’s charity event drew him in…. I’m really heartbroken.”
As word of Thomas’ death spread on social media early Thursday night, a number of former teammates and opponents reacted.
Coach Zach Azzanni of the Broncos’ wide receivers, who tutored Thomas in his last season with the team in 2018, tweeted: “I’m so sad… I’m devastated. I’m completely stumped. I’m not feeling well… I’m sobbing because… I’m not sure. DT, you will always be loved by the Azzanni family. I consider myself fortunate to have known you. #88, rest in peace.”
Thomas’ alma mater, Georgia Tech, uploaded a photo with the phrase “Rest in peace, Bay Bay,” a reference to Thomas’ nickname.
In a statement, Georgia Tech coach Geoff Collins stated, “I believe I speak for the whole Georgia Tech football family when I say we are grieved by the news of Demaryius’s death.” “Bay Bay and I met throughout his recruitment process, and I was fortunate enough to be a part of the Tech football staff for his true freshman year in 2006. Over the years, we’ve become closer and closer. I’ll never forget how excited our guys were when he was able to swing by and spend some time with us at fall camp this past August. Bay Bay was one of my all-time favorite individuals. I’m going to miss him a lot.”
DeMarcus Ware, Thomas’ three-year teammate, uploaded a selfie of Thomas and himself on Thursday night with the caption “heartbroken.” “So sad guy,” said Broncos defensive end Shelby Harris, and “Love forever bro,” said former Thomas teammate and linebacker Brandon Marshall.
Hundreds of Broncos fans uploaded videos and other condolences, and they spoke for many.
